ORGANIZATION: Animal Help Now

  • 18 people are interested

Animal Help Now is seeking volunteers to assist with various aspects of our work.

Animal Help Now, through ahnow.org and free iPhone and Android apps, leverages digital technologies to immediately connect people involved with animal emergencies with the most appropriate time- and location-specific resources and services.

Animal Help Now assists with wildlife emergencies across the United States. Compassionate people across the country who encounter wildlife in need - a bird who has struck a window, an orphaned litter of bunnies, a deer struck by a vehicle, a beached dolphin, etc. - can use Animal Help Now to get immediate and effective assistance.

Animal Help Now is a volunteer-driven organization. Our volunteers - including several of our tech team members - devote more than 200 hours per month.

Animal Help Now offers equal opportunities and embraces diversity by characteristics including race/ethnicity, age, gender identity, sexual orientation and ability.

Reporter/Storyteller

Every day Animal Help Now helps members of the public save dozens of lives by connecting people who need help addressing a wildlife emergency with experts who can provide such help. AHNow is designed to automate these connections; therefore users' stories aren't often readily available to us. However, notable exceptions to this exist - primarily people who choose to contact us directly instead of using our automated service. AHNow aims to tell as many user stories as practicable, including not only from those who contact us directly but also by reaching out to those who use our automated program. To accomplish this, the organization aims to substantially invigorate its reporting culture by adding a reporter. This volunteer will investigate and uncover data the rescuer leaves out to obtain and tell the full story, along with gathering photos and videos to share with our followers and members.
The reporter/storyteller will work with the tech team, social media director, executive director, public and rescuers. They will report to the executive director

Mission Statement

Mission: Animal Help Now creates apps that help animals. Animal Help Now is a volunteer-driven organization. AHNow gives first priority to its volunteers when hiring paid positions. AHNow offers equal opportunities and embraces diversity by characteristics including race/ethnicity, age, gender identity, sexual orientation and ability.

Description

Animal Help Now (AHNow) creates apps that help animals. The org’s eponymous app provides a 911-type service for wildlife emergencies & conflicts. Each year in the U.S. billions of birds and other wild animals are killed or injured by cats & dogs, window strikes, etc. and hundreds of millions of animals are injured or killed by motor vehicles. This free app directs people who have encountered injured or distressed wildlife or are dealing with "nuisance" wildlife to the nearest, most appropriate help, 24/7. The first nationwide response system for wildlife emergencies, it provides instant access to more than 3700 wildlife helpers across the United States, including rehabilitators, rescues & hotlines, veterinarians who treat wildlife & others. AHNow provides expert guidance on how to handle domestic animal issues (lost, found, abuse, etc.).

In 2022, in the aftermath of the Marshall Fire (12/30/2021), which claimed an estimated 1,000 companion animal lives and destroyed Animal Help Now’s headquarters, the organization began development of a new app that people can use to quickly and effectively communicate with their neighbors when disasters threaten and strike. The app provides a dedicated communications channel specifically for pet rescue so people who are not home or who otherwise need help evacuating animals can quickly and easily request such help. PHaR will give pets and other dependent animals their best chance yet of surviving when disasters strike.
