Now in our seventh year of operation, Liberated Movement is the only dance studio of its kind. We have zero debt, and have maintained operations primarily thanks to student donations as well as a few in-person/event-style and online fundraisers. We currently have two board members and are now looking to expand our board to include individuals who have specific backgrounds and professional experience. We currently have both a marketing professional and an entrepreneur on our board, but we really need someone to help us in the realm of accounting and finance to help us make smart decisions, forecast wisely, and leverage what we assets currently have to help us strategize future fundraisers, grant proposals, etc. Board of Directors responsibilities include: * Attend quarterly, in-person board meetings * Members who serve on individual committees (e.g. fundraiser planning) will meet when necessary * Participate in strategic planning and direction of the organization * Contact, recommend and recruit potential donors * Strategize fundraising initiatives such as events, grant applications, etc. * Assist the Liberated Movement staff with overall marketing and branding efforts

About LIBERATED MOVEMENT

Location:

380 Broadway, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10013, US

Mission Statement

Since our first class in March 2010, we have offered an array of genres from gifted instructors who modify exercises to the variety of abilities and levels in class. Beginners are invited to join open level classes and are celebrated for their participation. We invite students to explore movement from a point of joy, not judgment. Through constant encouragement, positive feedback from other students, and seeing their own progress, our students begin to thrive on dance as a form of exercise and expression. We are creating a liberated movement.

Description

We offer approximately 250 high-quality, well-structured, donation-based dance classes every year at Battery Dance Studios in lower Manhattan. Our class demographic is largely young adults (20s-30s) with some attendance by older adults (40s-80s). Cash donations are collected anonymously after class, or students can donate online. Our weekday classes are 1 hour, due to the limited availability of the studio & also because it less intimidating to new dancers. We offer longer weekend workshops (1.5 hrs) for a minimum $10 donation, half the average dance class price in NYC, to cover extra rent; yet no one is turned away for lack of funds

We provide a safe & accepting studio where people can afford to learn to dance. Our classes are a valuable service for those experiencing barriers entering or returning to the world of dance. Our dancers are among the underpaid who struggle with NYC cost of living while seeking opportunities for artistic expression & forms of physical movement. They range widely in age, race, background, body type & level of experience. All of our classes are open level & in almost every class there are several beginners alongside students with trained experience. Students can expect the teacher to be willing to work with anyone at all levels & are encouraged to participate freely.
