ORGANIZATION: Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley

Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2009 that strives to make a contribution to end homelessness in your local community. "Every child deserves a home and every family deserves a chance." FPSGV empowers local communities to help homeless children by helping their whole families stay intact, regain stable housing and return to steady work.

We're seeking motivated people with strong personal and professional networks who have IT, legal, marketing, finance, business development, executive, social services, business owner, government or non-profit backgrounds to join an incredible group of people and a wonderful organization.

Programs

  • Through our network of congregations and partners across San Gabriel Valley, we were able to provide a safe and support environment for children and their families
  • The FP Hope Center provides case management, housing and employment assistance, along with any needed social services
  • Alhambra Promise - Our partnership with Alhambra Unified School District enables us to identify and assist student and their families
Position
  • Board of Directors promote and advocate on behalf of FPSGV through fundraising, volunteer initiatives, and attracting new friends to the organization
  • Ensure the long term viability of the organization and ability to fulfill the stated mission

General Expectations
  • Board members must know and understand the organization’s purpose, mission, vision, goals, policies, program and investment areas.
  • Exercise prudence with the board in the control and oversight of the organization’s funds.
  • Be available to counsel the chief executive (and other staff, as needed) as appropriate and offer support.
  • Board members must be willing to serve as a Chair on standing or ad hoc committees as needed.
  • Board members are expected to understand and take seriously member duties and responsibilities.
  • Board members are expected to prepare for meetings by becoming familiar with the agenda and materials distributed in advance and to complete assignments for which they have taken responsibility.
  • Board members should expect to contribute to recruitment of nominees for the board.
  • Board members are expected to speak on behalf of the board only when asked to do so in writing.
  • Board members should all be donors for the organization and actively assist in helping the organization reach its fundraising goals, including meeting the annual "give or get" policy of at least $360.
Meeting Requirements
  • Attend in person or via conference/video monthly Board meetings (on Saturday) in San Gabriel Valley area
  • Maintain confidentiality of the board’s closed session and any information that would be considered proprietary.

Mission Statement

Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley exists to help families experiencing or at risk of homelessness achieve sustainable independence through a community-based approach.

Description

Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley relies almost solely on volunteer support and provides shelter and meals for homeless children and their families. The families stay one week at a time in different congregations in the San Gabriel Valley area. Volunteers provide nutritious breakfast, lunch and dinners for the family, as well as fun activities to do while the families are staying in the program. Volunteers also spend the night in the congregations with the families and donate goods and professional services that enable to families to prosper both in the program and upon graduation. In addition, there are volunteer opportunities to serve as a tutor, workshop facilitator, support the administrative functions of the office, social media manager, event planning, or use your professional skills in HR, finance, communications, fund development and other non-profit functions on a committee.
