SOLAR is a 38-bed shelter in East Rancho Dominguez that serves homeless individuals exiting hospitals and offers meals, on-site nursing care, health oversight, medical staff support, case management and housing resources. This center provides an alternative to repeated costly emergency room visits by homeless men and women who are affected by chronic illnesses.
We are looking for a volunteer to lead an activity with the clients at SOLAR each week! This opportunity will be once a week for 1 - 2 hours between 10am - 12pm or 1pm - 5pm on any weekday that works for you!
We have included some ideas below, however please keep in mind we encourage creativity and are always willing to discuss bringing something new to the table! Classes or activities run by volunteers are a wonderful way to share your hobbies and passions.
- Coloring
- Listening to music
- Arts and crafts
- Playing board games
- Playing bingo
- Hosting movie time
- Another fun and simple activity to be enjoyed by all!
*Please note that all volunteers will attend an orientation and are required to have a TB test. The agency will also run a background check.

The People Concern believes no one should have to live on the street or in a violent household. Our staff, volunteers and those we serve work together to address the effects of homelessness, poverty, mental and physical illness, abuse and addiction to ensure that all of our neighbors have access to the resources they need to be housed, healthy and safe. All new volunteers will need to complete our internal orientation course.
Description
The People Concern is one of Los Angeles County’s largest nonprofit social service agencies. We strive to end homelessness by providing care and support for those experiencing it, through outreach, housing, mental and medical health care, substance use services, domestic violence services, life skills & wellness programs and income assistance.
Since 1963, we have been the leaders in our field. Our staff, volunteers and those we serve all work together to address the effects of homelessness, poverty, mental and physical illness, abuse and addiction. We work to educate the broader community about these issues and improve public policy. The People Concern is a family - one dedicated to a community where everyone, regardless of the struggles they are overcoming, is housed, healthy and safe.
