This position will assist the English Learning Center (ELC) in administering distance learning classes to adult English language learners. The volunteer will help students extend their learning outside of school hours by monitoring and encouraging their progress on their online lessons (through USA Learns). They will provide assistance during computer lab time and support student activities during computer lab hours and via email. The volunteer will communicate their work, as well as student progress, to the ELC staff.
The English Learning Center is a program of Our Saviour's Community Services, a community-based nonprofit. We provide English (ESL), math, citizenship, computer and reading classes, as well as advocacy to adult immigrants and refugees in the Phillips neighborhood of South Minneapolis. Currently the English Learning Center serves nearly 400 adult students each year. It has become a well-known community center for immigrants and refugees from all around the world. We are a volunteer-based organization: over 130 volunteers teach all the program classes.

No prior teaching experience is necessary. We require our volunteers to attend a 2 hour in-house training session and attend teacher meetings at the beginning of each semester. A background check for all volunteers is also part of the application process.
For those interested in a career in ESL or adult basic education, volunteering at the ELC is an excellent way to begin or continue gaining experience. For everyone: it is a great way to connect with others in your community!
