BATZ

Dear Interested Volunteers,

It's that time of year again The Birmingham Zoo is looking for volunteers to make Boo at the Zoo (BATZ) and ZooLight Safari fun and exciting events for kids and families. Both events are sponsored by Wells Fargo. It takes about 100 volunteers per night for BATZ and 50 per night for Zoolights. I would greatly appreciate your help in informing eligible students, teachers, friends, family members and others about these upcoming volunteer opportunities.

During Boo at the Zoo, there are many different positions for volunteers. We need a "voice" inside a talking pumpkin, help at candy stations and volunteers to distribute maps and help with directions. We also need help loading and unloading the train and staffing train crossings for safety.

More info: Groups of 10 or more can call us at 205-909-4561 to register!

Volunteer Basics:

All volunteers must be at least 14 years of age to volunteer. Adult volunteers must be affiliated with a group, organization, business or corporation in order to be considered for this opportunity. We have a maximum number of volunteer positions available each night, and spaces will fill up quickly, so please sign up in advance. Also, remember that all volunteers must sign in upon arrival at the Zoo and out when leaving the Zoo to ensure that we know that all volunteers have completed their assignments. All volunteers must bring a signed release form. Teens (those under 18) must have a parent's or guardian's signature on their form in order to volunteer. If you need proof of your volunteer hours for this event, please bring a sheet with you and we will sign it when you sign-out for the evening. Hour sheets will not be handed out or signed after you leave Zoo grounds.

Volunteer Check-in and shift information : All volunteers will check-in at the education building located to the right of the front gate at 4:30pm and continue volunteering until 9:30pm. No split shifts, shifts that begin after 4:30pm, or shifts that end before 9:30pm will be accepted. Teens should be dropped off and picked up at the front entrance to the Zoo when they are done volunteering.

Volunteer Guidelines: Please remember to have fun and follow directions. Inappropriate volunteer behavior may result in the dismissal or banning of that volunteer from volunteering at the Zoo. Volunteers are to perform assigned tasks only. They are asked not to partake in any rides or attractions unless instructed otherwise by the Volunteer Manager or Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteers do not take or eat candy from the Zoo candy stations. They are expected to be courteous and use good judgment. Breaks are given for all jobs but volunteers must be able to follow directions and stay in their assigned job until they have volunteer to relieve them.

Please note: The Birmingham Zoo does not offer court-ordered community service as a volunteer opportunity.

Attire : BATZ- Family friendly costumes may be worn.

Dinner and Valuables: Please do not bring anything of value to the Zoo. The Zoo is not responsible for any lost items. The Zoo does not have a place to leave purses or other items. If you leave your items, you will have to be responsible for any losses. Please eat before you come to this event. You should have time for breaks but they may be at odd times due to scheduling.

Weather: Please remember to dress according to the weather. If it is raining, please call the Zoo to inquire about the status of Boo at the Zoo at 205-879-0409.

Boo at the Zoo Dates and Times

Costumes: Although optional, we would like for the volunteers to dress in family-friendly costumes. Please remember that costumes cannot be gory, suggestive, too scary or revealing. I and the Zoo staff will be the final judge. Please remember that this event is for kids from 6 months to about 10 years of age. We cannot have costumes that are inappropriate. If you think that we might say no, then please alter the costume. We don't want to send anyone home because of costumes or behavior.

Please allow 2-3 business days for your application to be processed. Volunteers will be contacted via email once their application has been cleared with further instructions.
