ORGANIZATION: JVS, Jewish Vocational Service

Responsibilities:

Assist two Spanish-speaking students during vocational English class for immigrants and refugees. The students have very low English language skills and need the extra support of a tutor during class. The lead teacher will provide supervision and guidance to the tutor.

Classes are M,W,F 9:00am - 12:00pm

The students will benefit most from a volunteer who can attend at least 2 classes each week.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Fluency in English and Spanish
  • ESOL teaching or tutoring experience preferred, but not required.
  • Empathy for the challenges of learning a new culture and a new language.

Program/Department Overview:

English for Advancement is a new program that provides vocational English classes and job search services to non-native English speakers whose goal is to find employment. Classes are held at sites in Lynn, Lawrence, Lowell East Boston, Roxbury and Dorchester In addition to English classes, clients receive career coaching including job search assistance, resume and cover letter writing and interview preparation.
