No One Left Behind is seeking Family Mentors for the San Francisco East Bay Chapter
No One Left Behind serves Afghan combat interpreters and combat support personnel who were promised asylum in the U. S. after serving in the Afghan war. Today, they are being forced to leave their homes in Afghanistan due to real threats by the Islamic State and Taliban for working for the US military. These refugees, who risked their lives and those of their families for our troops, arrive each week in the US unemployed with few funds and no household goods. Our mission is to provide them with the support to start a successful life in the US.
Mentors are our organization's critical contact point to help these refugees start successful new lives in America.
Mentors set their own schedules to meet with their families. You will meet with your family at least biweekly and help orient them to their new community. You will be a trusted friend, a valued advisor, and otherwise, support your family as they restart their lives in the USA. You have the freedom to choose your activities based on your interests and skills and your new friend's needs. Some activities will be more fun and bonding based (anything as small as going for ice cream or as much as going to visit a museum or a festival.) Other activities will be crucial to their success in the United States (helping write a resume, helping search for jobs, taking the family to Costco for the first time, studying for driver's license, etc.). The cross-cultural education is an amazing opportunity!
