Heartland’s Vigil Volunteer Program is in need of volunteers to support patients who need extra support during the final stages of life. Vigil volunteers receive specialized training to familiarize themselves with the signs and symptoms of approaching death and how to provide support to patients and their families. Volunteers are needed to sit with patients both day and night. Volunteers can help support patients who don't have family or friends available. Volunteer activities may include:

  • Reading comforting poems or prayers
  • Playing soothing music
  • Sharing stories with patients
  • Helping patients stay comfortable
  • Being present so that family members can rest or have a break

Requirements & Commitment

  • Driver's License Needed
  • Background Check
  • Must be at least 18
  • Orientation or Training
  • Variable, depending on the volunteer assignment.
  • Must be willing volunteer on-call during evenings, nights, or weekends.
