At SafeShelby, we need volunteers who stand ready to assist sexual assault victims in our clinic in Pelham, AL or at the hospital. Advocates meet clients at the door and go with them through the forensic interview and forensic exam. They provide emotional support and information regarding additional services.
Don't know what to say or do? No worries. We will equip you with what to say and how to say it while being yourself! We have trauma-informed training videos to help you understand victims' emotions and needs during this time of crisis, and we are always available to answer any questions.
Volunteer advocates are asked to take a minimum of two 12-hour on-call shifts per month. When on call, you won't come in unless you're needed. This means you can go on with your regular activities unless you're called. The response time is about 30 minutes, but may take slightly longer depending on varying locations. We try to be super flexible. In fact, you pick your own schedule!
Volunteers are asked to commit to at least twelve months of volunteerism.
