Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center Emergency Department Volunteer

Purpose of

Assignment:

To assist staff in providing timely and compassionate care to our Veteran patients

Primary Care Service Line

Department & Location:

Emergency Department, Downtown Division

Site Supervisor and Phone:

ED Medical Director- Dr. Gina Piazza, FACEP

Time Requirements:

Flexible, but would like the volunteer(s) to be regular enough that ED staff can get to know and trust and rely upon him/her/them.

Specific Duties:

Please continue on separate sheet if additional space is needed.

Aiding ED staff members with tasks like: taking specimens to the lab, picking things up from pharmacy, pushing patients to and from radiology areas, providing blankets and snacks/drinks to patients, interacting with patients and families, helping with stocking/supply needs, performing various tasks as directed by ED staff-all within the confines of the volunteer program and the volunteer’s level of training. There will always be the expectation that the volunteer is not performing any clinical work, and if he or she wants to provide food or beverage, or help a patient go somewhere, he or she will ask a nurse or a doctor for permission first.

Qualifications & Training Required:

The volunteer should be mature, able to handle the fast paced ED environment, be understanding of the sensitivities of this environment, have HIPAA/privacy/ blood borne pathogen and other appropriate trainings provided beforehand, know that very emotional things can happen here, be flexible and self-confident and a self-motivated team player.
