ORGANIZATION: Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland

  • 1 person is interested

Big Sisters are women (age 19 or older) who spend 2-4 hours a week for a minimum of one year with their Little Sister (age 7-17) in a one-to-one mentoring friendship.

Each Big & Little Sister match gets together once a week to participate in fun, no/low cost community-based activities they both enjoy such as crafts, sports, going to the beach, watching movies, and simply hanging out and spending time together! Big Sisters group activities are also offered each month.

Big Sisters can take vacations, travel for work or miss some weekly outings, within reason.

Visit www.bigsisters.bc.ca for more information and to download an application form!

Big Sister volunteers will receive training and on-going support from qualified professional staff throughout their relationship with their Little Sister. Big Sister volunteers have the unique opportunity to have a positive impact on a young girls life. Big Sisters enjoy the bonding experience with their Little Sister and making a difference in their community that they can see up close. Being a mentor also gives volunteers great skills that are transferable to every aspect of their lives such as communication and relationship-building skills, patience and understanding, and an increased sense of self-awareness.

Mission Statement

Enable life-changing mentoring relationships to ignite the power and potential of young people.

Description

Since 1960, Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland is a non-profit organization who has been enabling life-changing mentoring relationships to ignite the power and potential of young people.

Our experienced caseworkers carefully match Little Sisters with female identifying, transgender or non-binary adult mentors (19 years+) who help young people realize their full potential, avoid risky behaviour and make healthy choices. We match girls, self-identifying, transgender or non-binary children and youth between the ages of 7 to 17 with a positive female role model, through our three mentoring programs. Our Big Sisters, Study Buddy and Go Girls Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds Program.
