Wildfires are devastating communities across California, causing more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes and threatening many more. The Camp Fire in Northern California -- one of three blazing across the state -- is the most destructive in state history. Description: This exciting Metro NY North Disaster Action Team (DAT) Trainee volunteer position enables you to directly help your community recover from disasters such as residential fires (post-emergency), brush fires, and other emergencies.
Responsibilities: You will learn how to conduct disaster relief fieldwork which includes providing assistance ranging from emergency food, clothing, shelter, and limited financial support. Duties include conducting damage assessment of affected dwellings to determine habitability and using established processes to accurately & confidentially collect client information.
Additional duties may include:
Assisting in maintaining the readiness of disaster response vehicles and related equipment.
Supporting the Mass Care function, including assisting with mass feeding operations.
Time Commitment Flexible. Four shifts per month, on-call from your home, either during the day or evening; exact times vary.
Must be comfortable with basic data entry, and be able to lift 10-40 lbs. repeatedly, climb stairs, work in a potentially smoky and damp environment with little light, and stand or walk for extended periods of time in all types of weather.
Must be comfortable with periods of downtime while waiting to be dispatched.
