Program/Department Overview:
JVS works with employers to develop and customize training and education services for their employees at their location. Based on the employers’ business and workforce development goals, JVS will provide: English language classes (for non-native speakers), adult basic education, computer classes, and individual tutoring.
MGH and JVS have been partners for 20 years and we offer 10 levels of English for employees of the hospital.
Responsibilities:
Tutor an individual student to help her improve English literacy. She has high level speaking skills but very low literacy skills (1.9 =1st-2nd grade). She wants to learn to read and write.
She is available to meet with a tutor for one hour, two times per week, preferably on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:00am. Tutoring can take place in JVS's office at the hospital and literacy materials will be provided.
Volunteer will need to become an official MGH volunteer by attending training. Benefits include parking vouchers at MGH.
Skills/Qualifications:
Experience teaching literacy, especially low literacy levels.
Must have a high interest in the immigrant community in our workplaces.
