L.A. Works and Points of Light are partnering with XPRIZE to unveil the first part of a 12-month adult literacy program designed as a free mobile app.

The XPRIZE app is aiming to create unprecedented tech solutions for low literacy through removing barriers by improving access, increasing retention, and scaling to meet demand - anytime, anywhere - empowering the nearly 1 in 6 low literate adults living in the U.S. with the skills they need to improve their lives. Volunteers are needed to assist in recruiting participants, installing the app, and administering tests.

Invest in family literacy and give them the opportunity to thrive!

LEAD A TEAM- Manage and educate your team for the test/event.
SIGN IN/OUT- Sign people in and out.
INTAKE- Welcome participants and download an app on their smart phone to determine if they are eligible to participate.
TEST- Administer the tests as a Test Officer.
RECRUIT- Inform potential attendees about the program.

This program is being hosted at Los Angeles Public Library branches but organized through LA Works. Please visit their site to register and get more information. http://www.laworks.com/XPRIZE

About Los Angeles Public Library

Location:

630 W. 5th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90071, US

Mission Statement

The Los Angeles Public Library provides free and easy access to information, ideas, books and technology that enrich, educate and empower every individual in our city's diverse communities.

Description

The Los Angeles Public Library is largest public research institution west of the Mississippi.

With more than 70 branch libraries and Central Library subject departments serving millions of Angelenos on a yearly basis, our programs are supported by thousands of volunteers in a variety of capacities. Whether providing one on one literacy tutoring, cutting out craft supplies for story time activities, helping serve summer lunch at the library, or serving as a Friend of the Library, all volunteers play a role in the work of LAPL.

If you would like to volunteer, but don't see a listing that matches your interests, please contact your local branch or the Volunteer Engagement Office. Opportunities and needs vary by location and fluctuate throughout the year.

Please note that the minimum age for volunteers is 14 (with the exception of 11-13-year-olds joining Teen Councils), minimum time commitments are required for most opportunities, adult volunteers working with children will be fingerprinted, and LAPL does not accept court-mandated community service.
