Blank Park Zoo is looking for volunteers who have a desire to help care for animals in our care!

Animal care volunteers assist Zoo Keepers with the daily chores for the animals at Blank Park Zoo. Must be 18 or older and able to clean, sweep, hose, cut up diets, lift heavy loads and follow specific directions. Opportunities are available in the mornings 7 days a week, 8:00am - 12:00pm, with the following teams: Aquatics/Amphibians, Avian/Reptiles, Education, Large Mammals, and Small Mammals.

Please Note: Volunteers are placed on a need by need basis and do not work directly with the animals. Interest in these opportunities does not guarantee there is spot available, area managers determine the number of volunteers allowed to work in their area.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Blank Park Zoo is to inspire an appreciation of the natural world through conservation, education, research, and recreation.

Description

The Blank Park Zoo is located in Des Moines, IA and manages 49 acres of land. Of that, 22 acres have been developed into animal exhibits or facilities.

Currently there are 104 different animal species and 1,484 animal specimens cared for at the Blank Park Zoo.

Individuals age 18 and over may volunteer for most special events, visitor services, office support, and grounds without adult supervision. Children ages 13-17 may participate in special events only under the supervision of a parent/guardian. Education volunteers must be 18 or older.

ZooCrew is a special volunteer program for teens 13-17 years old. Applications are accepted until April 27th for the 2012 summer.
