Wildfires are devastating communities across California, causing more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes and threatening many more. The Camp Fire in Northern California -- one of three blazing across the state -- is the most destructive in state history. We want to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you find access to shelter. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know the most effective ways to contribute.
Did you know that we have a working boat shop at the Foss Waterway Seaport? We are always looking for volunteers! At the boat shop, we strive to preserve the past, acknowledge and encourage the present, and identify and plan for the future. We are involved in many projects including repairing and restoring historic vessels as part of museum exhibits, repairing boat cradles by strengthening or rebuilding the frames, and building new boats. Volunteers will also act as docents in welcoming any museum guests that come by the boat shop and sharing your knowledge about the boat shop and the museum.
No boat building experience is required! All safety and power tool use training will be provided!
The boat shop is open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10:00am - 4:00pm. There must be a minimum of 2 people in the boat shop (1 skilled) in order to use the power tools. Volunteer hours are based purely on your availability - we welcome any time you can come in and participate!
