BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF IDA INTERN WORK: The Refugee Asset Building Intern will provide one-on-one support to refugees working to attain goals in their life. This intern will help refugees reach their dreams, whether it is buying a home, a car or creating a savings account for a rainy day. The best part of this internship? You give clients tools and resources to be successful, and in some cases, even free money to make it even easier.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Asset Building Intern will be responsible for following up with current and potential clients, while providing TA and administrative support as needed.
- Contact clients to answer initial questions about the IDA matched savings program, conduct pre-eligibility screenings, and schedule a Program Orientationto explore ways that an IDA matched savings account will benefit them
- Place reminder calls for scheduled Orientations, and follow up with attendees and no-shows following the orientations.
- Coordinate interpretation for Orientations and Enrollment appointments, as needed.
- Follow up with existing clients per program schedule to remind them about savings deposit dates, and to field any questions or concerns about the program.
- Communicate client questions or concerns to the IDA Specialist, as needed.
- Conduct IDA Orientation sessions twice weekly, or as assigned.
- Assist the IDA Specialist with file maintenance and other administrative tasks, as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma, or equivalent.
- Pursuing an Associates, Bachelors or Master’s degree in Sociology, International Studies/Affairs, Microfinance, Business, Marketing or related field.
- Flexibility to meet with clients at agreed times and locations.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to travel to locations within Salt Lake City to meet with clients.
- Proficiency in primary refugee language preferred.
- Excellent listening and interpersonal skills, especially with clients from different cultural, religious, and economic backgrounds.

Each year, thousands of refugees are invited by the U.S. government to seek safety and freedom. Forced to flee conflict or persecution, many refugees have survived against incredible odds. Refugees step off the plane with next to nothing but their dignity, hope, and determination. In Salt Lake City, the IRC helps approximately 500 refugees each year to rebuild their lives.
