BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK: The Refugee Youth In-Home Tutor Program Intern will work directly with the tutors of a newly formed refugee youth in-home tutor program. This program encompasses communicating regularly with the tutors, the students, their families, and the IRC staff to make sure the IRC is helping the tutors to be effective in their positions. The intern will act as the liaison between the IRC and the program participants. They will check in with the tutors on a regular basis and update the IRC on the progress of the program. They will plan training sessions and implement tracking measures to account for the various components of the program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review and make changes to an established timeline to help with program implementation
  • Make monthly check-in calls to tutors, update information in Program tracking sheet and perform other weekly/monthly tasks according to the timeline
  • Be aware of when parent teacher conferences are and assist tutors in getting the clients and their parents there
  • Prepare for quarterly trainings that are high quality and all-encompassing for refugee youth development work
  • Write and track surveys to ensure continuous follow-up from teachers, students, parents, and tutors
  • Follow up with families and tutors if problems are reported and to find success stories
  • Document and report progress of program to Youth Program Coordinator on a weekly basis
  • Update Facebook and monthly newsletter on the programs performance.
  • Other related duties as assigned including monthly office support & reception coverage.
  • Meet with and provide assistance to tutors who need extra ideas or support with their students.
  • Request student participant data from Granite School District and advise tutors based on that data.

REQUIREMENTS: This position requires a great deal of self-motivation, dependability, flexibility, commitment to the program, attention to detail and excellent communication/people skills.

  • Minimum 2 years of college or equivalent experience in social work, education/child development, international studies or related field
  • Previous experience with youth & education preferred; experience with refugees a plus
  • Committed to at least 6 months working a minimum 20 hours per week
  • Adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies & dress code
  • Willing to learn about IRC, cross-cultural communication and clients’ ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; fluency in a refugee language helpful
  • Outgoing & Independent; able to accomplish tasks efficiently and in a timely manner
  • IRC and School District background checks required, including driving history report
