BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF POSITION: The Early Childhood Education Specialist will work under the direction of the Youth Program Coordinator. He or she will be responsible for coordinating services for children from ages 2 to 4 who are within the 2 years of IRC case management. The Early Childhood Education Specialists will establish relationships with community partners while closely collaborating around early childhood interventions/school enrollments within Head Start Programs, UPSTART online program and the 4 key school district that the Youth Program works with in the Salt Lake Valley (Salt Lake, Granite, Murray and Canyons).RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Screening families for potential participation in programs
- Enroll new arrivals and active clients in early education programs
- Demonstration how to go from home to school and back using whatever method of transportation available to the family
- Act as a representative for the family at school orientations
- Attend first day of school with children
- Research available daycare programs and preschools in community
- Coordinate outreach efforts to provide information regarding Early Childhood Education to families
- Visit classrooms to evaluate children’s adaptation into school environment
- Track caseload of up to 150 early childhood clients
- Evaluate program efforts through in-person pre and post survey
Requirements:
- Previous experience with youth & education preferred; experience with refugees a plus
- Committed to at least 6 months working a minimum 20 hours per week
- Adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies & dress code
- Willing to learn about IRC, cross-cultural communication and clients’ ethnic backgrounds
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; fluency in a refugee language helpful
- Outgoing & Independent; able to accomplish tasks efficiently and in a timely manner
- IRC and School District background checks required, including driving history report

Refugees step off the plane with next to nothing but their dignity, hope, and determination. In Salt Lake City, the IRC helps approximately 500 refugees each year to rebuild their lives.
