BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 27 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. The resettlement office in Salt Lake City, Utah provides services to approximately 500 refugees annually.
SCOPE OF WORK:
This position supports our Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Program by helping new and soon to be mothers access healthy foods through the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) government benefit program. The process of applying and using WIC benefits is difficult, even for English speakers. The MCH program recently enlisted volunteers to help clients learn how to travel to their WIC clinic and use benefits at the grocery store. The Family Nutrition Access Intern will be responsible for scheduling WIC appointments, overseeing volunteers, and improving the functioning of this new program.
Essential Job Functions:
- Schedule WIC appointments and volunteers; Confirm appointments and interpretation
- If available, liaise with volunteers to troubleshoot during appointments
- Track the completion of WIC appointments and grocery orientations
- Communicate progress and challenges with supervisors
- Office duties: Transport a client to a health appointment weekly; Complete Front Desk shift monthly; Complete Office Support shift monthly
ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES:
- Create monthly newsletter to keep volunteers up to date and engaged
- Develop a more efficient system for volunteer scheduling
- Document lessons learned
- Recruit and train new volunteers

Mission Statement
The International Rescue Committee serves refugees and communities victimized by oppression or violent conflict worldwide. This commitment is expressed in emergency relief, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement assistance, and advocacy.
Description
Each year, thousands of refugees are invited by the U.S. government to seek safety and freedom. Forced to flee conflict or persecution, many refugees have survived against incredible odds. Refugees step off the plane with next to nothing but their dignity, hope, and determination. In Salt Lake City, the IRC helps approximately 500 refugees each year to rebuild their lives.
