About Ten Thousand Villages Mishawaka

Location:

Mission Statement

We create opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income by bringing their products and stories to our markets through long-term, fair trading relationships. Our name -- Ten Thousand Villages -- was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s quote. Because in every village are people who want to live a meaningful life with dignity and who bring beautiful culture worth sharing. Multiply the village idea by ten thousand and it represents the world we’re working to build.

Description

We are not your typical business. We are a non-profit social enterprise that partners with independent small-scale artisan groups, co-ops and workshops to bring their wares to our markets.

As a nonprofit enterprise, we rely on more than 1,000 volunteers to help us accomplish our mission. Volunteers help out with many aspects of our operations, from the backroom to the sales floor.

Fair trade proves that greater justice in world trade is possible. It highlights the need for change in the rules and practice of conventional trade and shows how a successful business can also put people first. It is a tangible contribution to the fight against poverty, climate change and economic crisis.
