Did you know that thousands of sea turtles are killed by plastic pollution and slaughtered for consumption every year in Asia? Because Hawaii is such a wonderful refuge for sea turtles, it's easy to forget that in other places in the world, sea turtles are still the victims of human consumption. In the Asia Pacific region, Green sea turtles (Honu) are killed for their meat, and Hawksbill sea turtles (Honu'ea) are killed for their shells. PLEASE HELP!

Sea Turtles 911, a non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to promote sea turtle conservation to tourists in Waikiki. Many tourists in Hawaii are from Asia, a hub for wildlife poaching and illegal trade of endangered sea turtles. Together, our goal is to give the turtles a voice and educate the tourists about both the devastating decline of the turtle population, including plastic pollution issues, and what they can do to help to give them a chance of survival.

Where? we volunteer at local organizations, including hotels and aquariums on Oahu to raise public awareness on this environmental crisis.

Example activity: http://www.seaturtles911.org/news/hawaii-sister-state-china-celebrate-world-sea-turtle-day.htm
Responsibilities include:
1. education the public, including locals and tourists, about the environmental issues affecting the conservation of sea turtles.
2. engage the public, including children and youth, in arts and crafts with turtle theme.
3. promote events and fundraising initiatives to support charity's mission.
Volunteers should be enthusiastic and passionate about preserving animals and the ocean; and have a cheerful, positive attitude!

Mission Statement

To continuously advocate for sea turtle rights. To support the advancement of sea turtle conservation by creating a safer oceanic habitat for the continued survival of sea turtles and all marine life; and to promote their peaceful co-existence with humans by ending the global exploitation of sea turtles. Sea Turtles 911 uses grassroots action to spread awareness and appreciation through education, contribute to local empowerment through ecotourism, and to successfully achieve sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation.

Description

Sea Turtles 911 is a non-profit organization based in Hawaii and Hainan, sister states between the United States and China. The charity works to advance marine turtle conservation by raising public awareness and education to reduce environmental impacts on sea turtles; researching ways to achieve sustainable populations of sea turtles; rescuing injured sea turtles and releasing them back to their natural habitats. Marine turtles are an ideal animal for inspiring wildlife oceanic appreciation amongst people of different cultures since they are one of the rare animals which innocently defy political and geographical boundaries, as they instinctively migrate through waters of different countries. With their naturally appealing attraction to the public as gentle and charismatic animals, sea turtles have globally attained the iconic status as a 'flagship species’, serving as Mother Nature’s ambassador for the ocean. Sea Turtles 911’s mission to save sea turtles provides a platform of opportunities to unite people of different countries and cultures to work together with a shared, common goal of preserving natural living marine resources for future generations.
