Rhone House

Rhoneymeade Arboretum and Sculpture Garden is a rural arboretum surrounded by acres of farm, field, hedgerow and woodland. It encompasses a historic homestead (the house dates from 1853) and an art studio with rotating monthly exhibits. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places, and there's a great deal of historic interest here. We are looking for docents to help greet visitors on weekends (open hours are 10 to 4, Saturday and Sunday, April through October) and tell them a bit about Rhoneymeade. We will provide information and training, and the schedule is flexible. If you are interested in local history, the environment, and art, this is a great opportunity!

About RHONEYMEADE INC

Location:

Mission Statement

To preserve our farm, fields, and forest; to create an oasis of beauty, both natural and manmade; and to share this with all who wish to come and learn.

Description

Rhoneymeade is an intimate garden where a blossoming arboretum nurtures a variety of sculptures. Surrounded by acres of farm, field, hedgerow and woodland, Rhoneymeade straddles a high ridge in the valley between Nittany and Tussey Mountains. The 150 acre site was first settled by Michael Rhone in 1794 and has been continuously farmed for over 200 years. A brick farmhouse, finished in 1853 by Michael Rhone’s grandson, Leonard Rhone (the originator of the Grange Fair), is near the center of the property.

The farm was purchased by Richard Morgan, a retired Penn State professor, in 1984. Landscaping the six acres around the house began immediately. In 1986, Dr. Morgan signed a conservation easement with ClearWater Conservancy to protect the open space resources of the land. Dr. Morgan passed away on August 23, 2015, but his vision for Rhoneymeade lives on in our mission and continues to guide and inspire us.

Rhoneymeade welcomes visitors free of charge every Saturday and Sunday, 10am - 4pm, from April through October.
