Homework Helpers assist K-8 students with homework assignments and developing literacy and mathematics skills. They provide help with all subjects up to the 8th grade level. Volunteers assist students for at least two hours per week during the after school program. They must be comfortable interacting with K-8 students both in small groups and individually. Homework Helpers have opportunities to make a difference in the lives of students and derive satisfaction from supporting a culture of higher learning. They help to encourage and inspire students to become lifelong learners. A volunteer commitment throughout the school year is requested. College students will be considered for a short-term volunteer assignment for at least one academic quarter.

Responsibilities

· Actively listen as student read their homework assignments and describe school projects to you.

· Ask open ended questions to engage students in a discussion to support their understanding of an assignment and how to get started, Check back with students as they are working on their assignments.

· Assist students who are English language learners with developing reading comprehension and

writing skills. Offer literacy learning activities (e.g. games) to support students’ learning.

· Ask students to review their completed homework assignments with you. Offer to read students’

written assignments. Provide constructive feedback and encouragement.

Qualifications and Skills: Homework Helpers must be at least 18 years old. Volunteer applicants will be asked to complete a State criminal background, FBI, and child abuse reference check. Homework Helpers should also poses the following qualifications and skills:

· Must be a high school graduate or hold a high school equivalency degree.

· Experience interacting with youth as a teacher, tutor, volunteer or family member.

· Empathy, a friendly demeanor and communication skills, especially active listening.

· Patience, flexibility, creativity and a willingness to use a variety of methods to promote understanding withstudents.

· Strong English and/or mathematics skills.

· Respect of diverse lifestyles, cultures, religions and values.

· Ability to work as part of a team with other Homework Helpers and Afterschool Program Staff

United Communities Southeast Philadelphia has a long and rich tradition of service to children, adults and families residing in Southeast Philadelphia. United Communities was established in 1969 through the merger of three settlement houses that date back to 1847. For the past 49 years, United Communities has carried out the original settlement mission to promote the educational and economic advancement of individuals and families within its host neighborhoods. United Communities currently operates two facilities, each of which serves as a major hub for community resources and spirit in three very low income, diverse areas of Southeast Philadelphia: the Houston Center, 8 th Street and Snyder Avenue; and Southwark House at Front & Ellsworth Streets.United Communities provides services and community driven activities that address the needs, further the strengths, and reinforce community spirit for more than 10,000 children, adults and families through a wide array of services.
