Sound the Alarm

Every day, the American Red Cross responds to 64,000 disasters nationally, and most of them are home fires. Each day, 7,000 people die as a result of home fires.
The Red Cross has a stated goal of reducing deaths by home fires by 25% by 2020, just three years from now. You may be most familiar with our work in responding to disasters. We have teams that focus on Preparedness, and the program is the Home Fire campaign.
Since 2014, Red Cross has run a National Home Fire Campaign where we install smoke alarms to at-risk homes and communities. To-date, we have installed over 900,000 and over 270 lives have been saved. In order to reach one million installed alarms, we are conducting a national Sound the Alarm blitz. Our goal in the Southeastern Colorado region is 1750 installed alarms during events between September 23 and October 14 in Leadville, Canon City, Pueblo, Monument/Palmer Lake, and Colorado Springs.
In order to reach our goal, we need volunteers like you and invite you to join us to install alarms in vulnerable communities to save lives. Volunteers will install alarms, educate residents on home fire safety and evacuation, and document/report each visit.
We know that having one working smoke alarm in a home increases the odds of surviving a home fire by 50%. Creating a home fire evacuation plan with the resident increases the odds of survival even more. Volunteers leave each home visit knowing that the residents are better prepared to escape home fires and that this program can and does save lives in the event of a home fire. For more information, please email Linda Russett, linda.russett@redcross.org and ask how you can register for an event.
