Position Overview: This is an opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of adults whose limited literacy is a challenge in their everyday life. See how rewarding the experience can be. The goal of the tutoring program is to create an opportunity for individuals to improve their reading, writing, basic math skills, get their GED, or learn English by working one-on-one with a tutor.

Responsibilities:

  • Tutor one learner 1-2 times each week for 1.5 hour sessions in one of Placer County Library’s 9 branches

  • Submit monthly time logs

  • Coordinate with literacy staff

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English proficiently and clearly

  • Possess patience, flexibility, and excellent oral communication skills

  • Fingerprint clearance is required (no charge)

  • Age 18 or older

Training Provided:

  • Tutor Training- 3 hours

  • All materials provided free of charge

  • Individual assistance from literacy staff is available

Established in 1985 as a core program of Placer County Library, Placer Adult Literacy Service (PALS) assists the Placer County Library in fostering the love of reading and learning. • PALS connects people who want to learn to read or improve their literacy skills with one-on-one tutors who can help. • PALS works to improve digital literacy by teaching computer skills and the safe use of social media. • PALS inspires families to nurture a love of reading and life-long learning in their children.

The Placer Adult Literacy Service provides free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring for adults who want to improve their reading, writing, basic math skills, get their GED, or learn English.
