ORGANIZATION: NEW START Adult Learning Program

Job Description: Must have business/management/administration/non-profit experience or experience in the field of education. Must be willing to help organize/participate in fundraising opportunities.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours (usually less) a month + attending events when possible. All board meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm unless otherwise stated. They tend to last about 1-1.5 hours.

Job Duties:
  • Attend monthly board meetings at the Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library in Odessa, DE. Here you will be updated on the activities, plans and actions of NEW START. You will also have the opportunity to vote in board decisions, offer advice, suggestions and ideas based on your work experience and expertise.
  • Review board meeting notes and offer changes when needed.
  • Communicate with NEW START Director and other board members.
  • Attend annual Scrabble Tournament Fundraiser and other fundraisers when able.
  • Volunteer at information table at various events and fundraisers when able.
  • Help find raffle table/silent auction donation items for fundraisers, use your resources to benefit.
  • Help organize and participate in fundraising opportunities when able.

Mission Statement

NEW START provides free one-to-one tutoring and small group instruction for adults who want help learning or improving basic skills in reading, writing, and math or for those learning English as a Second Language. Tutors and students meet at community based sites and public libraries throughout New Castle County.

Description

NEW START was founded in 1985 through the efforts of the Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library, Delaware City Library, and Appoquinimink Library. It is a non-profit educational corporation dedicated to helping adults in New Castle County to better their lives and their communities by improving their reading, writing, math and speaking skills. The main office is located at the Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library. The program is funded through grants, corporate and individual contributions, and in-kind services of local libraries and churches. For more information please visit our website. NEW START is an affiliate of ProLiteracy, the largest volunteer-based literacy provider in the United States. It is one of many family programs sponsored by the Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library.
