Creative Career Exploration Program


What is the Creative Career Exploration Program?

Creative Career Exploration offers teens an introduction to the many facets of the creative industry. Over school breaks, teens attend FANYC led trainings on professional development skills and tour top creative companies. Volunteer mentors are paired one-on-one with a teen (10th - 12th grade) to support them in continuing to develop communication, networking, resume writing, interview and other professional skills. Mentors and mentees meet once a month in person and maintain regular communication throughout the cycle.

Time Commitment (October - June)

  • 1 afternoon per month (in-person one-on-one meeting)

  • 2-3 points of communication per month to support career readiness skill-building (via email, phone, skype)

  • Quarterly check-ins with Teen Arts Program Manager by phone

  • Complete monthly online survey

As a TAP Mentor You Can Expect Free Arts to Provide

  • Six hours of professional development trainings in Youth Development

  • Free Arts NYC Membership Card with Museum visit discounts

  • Activity samples and career readiness curriculum

  • Dedicated Teen Arts Program staff support, including quarterly check-ins

Creative Career Exploration Mentor Responsibilities

  • Prepare teens for Creative Career company visits (Thank you letters, research skills)

  • Model positive communication and job readiness skills

  • Help teen mentee explore their career interests

  • Connect teens with

  • Submit monthly online survey after visit


Mentor Applicant Requirements

  • Experience and enthusiasm for working with teens (8 th -12 th graders)

  • Interest in supporting career readiness skill building

  • 1-2 years youth development experience preferred


Application Process:

  1. Submit Supplemental Application

  2. Attend a General Volunteer Orientation

  3. Interview with a Free Arts staff member and submit references (2 professional, 1 personal)

If paired with a mentee you will be invited to:

  1. Fingerprinting with Go Pass (only for volunteer accepted into the program)

  2. Attend Program Logistics Training (Choice of dates: Sept. 26th or Sept. 30th(

  3. Attend Meet & Greet with Mentee (Date TBD)
