ORGANIZATION: Breakthrough Silicon Valley

Are you interested in:

  • Inspiring low-income students in our community to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math?
  • Providing young girls and boys detailed paths to success in these fields?
  • Networking with other professionals in Silicon Valley?
Join us for an interactive and fun morning with Breakthrough students. Via STEM-based, hands-on activities and round-table discussions, professionals working in STEM careers have the opportunity to share their passion and experience with students in our community.

In Silicon Valley, Latinos make up 25% of the population, but only 3% of the high-tech workforce (Baron, 2012). Latina women number even fewer in high-tech fields. The underrepresentation of women, Latinos and other minority groups in STEM represents a waste of talent. As a leader in technology and innovation, Silicon Valley’s competitive edge is dependent on a highly educated workforce, but the unfortunate reality is that we lack a robust pipeline of homegrown candidates. Breakthrough Silicon Valley addresses this critical need. We expand the pool of highly skilled professionals and develop leaders who reflect the changing demographics of our region.

About Breakthrough Silicon Valley

Location:

Mission Statement

Our dual mission is: to prepare talented and motivated but under-resourced middle school students for success in academically rigorous high school programs that will lead them to college. and to inspire and prepare high school and college students to enter and excel in careers in education.

Description

Breakthrough’s innovative Students Teaching Students model partners middle-school students with college and high school students who serve as teachers, role models and mentors, providing real-life examples that it’s 'cool to be smart’. Breakthrough boasts a proven ripple effect of positive results: 93% of Breakthrough student alumni are accepted to college preparatory programs and 72% of Breakthrough teachers, many of whom were Breakthrough students, go on to pursue professional careers in education.

Students commit to a minimum of two years of tuition-free intensive six-week summer sessions and after-school programs in which they take classes in core academic subjects, and participate in elective courses ranging from astronomy to African-American literature. Breakthrough's classes are rigorous and small (a maximum 4:1 student to teacher ratio) and full participation and attendance is expected of every student.
