2018 Summer Program in Latin America with Peace Boat

Join Peace Boat US for their 2018 summer program in Central America!

Peace Boat US is looking for youth from the ages 16 to 30 years old to join on their 98th voyage through the Panama Canal from Cristobal, Panama to Puntarenas, Costa Rica before disembarking in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. This program will run from July 20th to August 3rd with the goal of educating youth on the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals in Latin America. Participants will get to have cultural exchanges with people such as refugee youth, government officials, and even some indigenous groups such as the Kuna and the Embera. They will get to see the beauty of nature in the countries they visit. Participants will leave the program with a more in depth understanding of how countries in Latin America are working towards the sustainable development goals.

What is Peace Boat?

Peace Boat US is the New York office for Peace Boat, an international NGO dedicated towards peace and sustainability. They promote the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals through their programs which educate participants on the ongoings of the world such as eco-hiking in Costa Rica or learning about the indigenous cultures in Panama. They do this through their global and regional voyages on their ship, the Ocean Dream which carries 1,000 passengers each voyage. The Ocean Dream circumnavigates the globe three times a year in three different voyages. One goes through the Southern Hemisphere, the Northern Hemisphere, and the equator. Each global voyage lasts for approximately 3 months. While onboard participants in the voyage have a variety of workshops, seminars, and activities to participate in. They can range from things such as karaoke to a workshop on self identity. They also have guest speakers that come onboard the journey to share their knowledge and experiences such journalists, academics, community organizers, indigenous leaders, Nobel Peace Laureates, and UN representatives. The entire journey is filled with new opportunities and constant learning. Participants can be referred to as lifelong learners because age does not matter when learning.

Peace Boat offers two full scholarships and several partial scholarships for those looking to participate known as the "Youth for SDGs" scholarships. Mission Statement

Peace Boat US works to build a culture of peace around the world by connecting people across borders and creating opportunities for learning, activism and cooperation. We achieve this through programs in which people from the US and around the world participate in voyages onboard the Peace Boat, our Japan-based partner organization and one of the most unique and creative peace-building initiatives in the world. Programs combine learning, activism, advocacy and travel, allowing participants to experience the reality of global issues such as the impact of war, environmental degradation, gender violence, poverty and other issues. Participants learn through immersion in grassroots peace-building that is the Peace Boat experience.

Description

Peace Boat US programs give you access to global experts, travel opportunities, learning spaces and the experience of a lifetime as we travel around the world visiting more than 20 countries in three months. We work with academic institutions to create custom programs for groups of students, ranging from one week to a full voyage of approximately 100 days, which combines onboard learning with hands on experience and action in the countries we visit. Working in partnership with our partner NGOs we support and promote fair trade, sustainable development, environmental conservation and peace building initiatives in the regions that we visit. We also extend a warm welcome to travelers of all ages and backgrounds who are interested in any combination of life-long learning, travel, adventure, activism and immersion in Peace Boat’s unique community onboard. We look forward to having you sail with us! Please contact the Peace Boat US Office for more information about costs and procedures.
