Intern will work closely with the employment team and will help prepare materials for Job Readiness Training (JRT) attended by refugee classes. The intern will assist in teaching JRT to new arrivals, and coach refugees through searching for, and applying for, jobs in the U.S. ​

Time Commitment: 8-10 hours per week (3 month minimum; 6+ months preferred) ​

Duties:

  • Assist in teaching job readiness to newly arrived refugees​
  • Prepare materials for job readiness classes ​
  • Create new curriculum to teach clients about the U.S. job process and norms ​
  • Plan and coordinate when/where classes will take place​
  • Follow up with individuals after class to ensure they have all the skills necessary to start their job search​
  • Ensure clients know how to navigate public transportation​
  • Help clients understand and complete the new hire paperwork needed to start a job​

Preferred Skills:

  • Foreign language proficiency ​
  • Experience teaching ​

Required Skills:

  • Applicant should be independent, organized and willing to ride public transportation and/or provide transportation for clients in own vehicle​

Learning Objectives:

The JRT intern will gain knowledge of the job market available to refugees in Colorado. They will also gain experience working one-on-one with clients, and learn about the obstacles many newly-arrived refugees face in the U.S. They will gain experience in adult education and curriculum development.​

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit humanitarian organization that works in the U.S. and around the world to help people whose lives and livelihoods have been shattered by conflict and disaster as they survive, recover and regain control of their future. We are one of the nine national resettlement agencies that partner with the U.S. Department of State/Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM) to provide services to refugees approved for resettlement through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.
The International Rescue Committee provides opportunities for refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants to thrive in America. Each year, thousands of people, forced to flee violence and persecution, are welcomed by the people of the United States into the safety and freedom of America. These individuals have survived against incredible odds. The IRC works with government bodies, civil society actors, and local volunteers to help them translate their past experiences into assets that are valuable to their new communities. In Denver and other offices across the country, the IRC helps them to rebuild their lives.
