Position Summary
This position does not travel but supports the work of Minnesota Children's Museum 's traveling exhibit rental business. Minnesota Children’s Museum tours 13 exhibits (with one more currently beginning development) to museums and attractions throughout North America. This position is responsible for assisting the traveling exhibits department with various tasks related to research, customer relations, and basic exhibit prop fabrication. The intern will develop an understanding of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into running and supporting this leading exhibit rental business.
Major Job Accountabilities
This is an estimate of the duties to be included in this internship. The exact duties and projects will be determined by mutual agreement of the intern and museum staff. All duties will be carried out with the direction and supervision of the traveling exhibit manager and traveling exhibit coordinator.
Work with the traveling exhibit manager to:
- Communicate with potential museum clients to gather data, create targeted mailing lists, research new client pools (including international markets)
- Collect customer feedback for analysis and make recommendations
- Research and present incoming exhibit options and for the Museum
- Organize licensor information and payment schedules
- Other duties as assigned
Work with the traveling exhibit coordinator to:
- Learn about creating simple props: pouring molds, sanding, using a drill
- Lead volunteers in unpacking, organizing, and inventorying Thomas & Friends props
- Inventory exhibit back-up supplies
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
1. Computer skills, including MS Office Suite (especially Word and Excel)
2. Adaptability and willingness to learn new skills
3. Basic knowledge of power tools
4. Excellent written and verbal skills
5. Comfort with speaking on the phone
6. Ability to work well with people
7. Positive attitude and interest in nonprofits and museums
8. Ability and willingness to work independently
9. Ability to organize time, follow directions and stay on task
