The Independent Living Skills Program is catered to teens 13-17; these teens will eventually depart the foster care system at age 18. To prepare them for independent living circumstances we would like to implement a financial literacy course. A curriculum was already devised, but is definitely malleable. We would require one mock-class to determine eligibility of the facilitaor, but the actual course won't begin until the fall. The current schedule only requires 8 weeks, in which the course sequences are divided into two 4-week sessions; details will be reviewed in full at orientation.

Description
Whaley Children's Center serves abused and neglected children throughout the State of Michigan between the ages of 5 and 17. Most of our children are permanent wards of the court and will never return to the custody of their biological parents. Many children who reside here have been placed several times in foster care and other institutions before coming to Whaley. Whaley is one of the only facilities in the state that house the younger child, those 5 to 10. Our beginning: Robert J. Whaley had been president of Citizens Bank at the time of his death in 1922. In his will, Mr. Whaley bequeathed funds to build the Donald M. Whaley Memorial Home in memory of his 10 year old son, Donald, who had died in 1880. Whaley Children's Center began serving children and families over 80 years ago. Children's Residence: Whaley provides residential care for 16 children in two 8-bed cottages in the Ruth Rawlings Mott and Charles Stewart Mott Children's Residence. Children between the ages of 6 and 14 are admitted into this program of intense therapy. A child's day-to-day activities are designed to provide a successful experience that can help them to feel good about themselves and learn to socialize with other children and adults. Group Homes: The Kiwanis, Rotary, Optimist and Zonta group homes are located in neighborhoods near the Mott Children's Residence. In each home, youth specialists care for six children. A child can be admitted directly to or be moved from the Children's Residence into a group home when he or she has developed the ability to function in a less structured setting. Children can range from 5 to 17 years old, these homes care for 24 children. At Whaley, we embrace a strength-based approach when working with children and youth. We believe that all children have gifts and talents and are jewels just because they exist. It is our commitment to model and teach the children how to love themselves and discover their value and worth as a human being. Ultimately it is our intent to touch the hearts of our children, in return they will be able to touch the hearts of others and make a positive difference within the community.
