1. Assignment
Rehab Engineering Support
2. Purpose of Assignment
Volunteer is responsible for offering support to the assistive technology (AT) within the SCI unit. The volunteer reports to the SCI Therapy manager and will be supervised by the Assistive Technology Specialist. Volunteer will be available to all departments within SCI, Prosthetics and Biomedical Engineering to assist with maintaining and troubleshooting any off-network, non-medical technology found on unit while under supervision.
3. Tasks
- Assist with connecting personal patient devices to the public patient WiFi
- Troubleshoot AT device issues
- Offer support to the maintenance (i.e. cleaning and basic repair) of the Autonome call system while under nursing supervision.
- Offer incidental, supervised support to Prosthetics and Biomed Engineering departments, if requested.
4. Time Commitment
Shifts 8 a.m. - Noon, Noon - 4 p.m. or negotiated. Volunteer can work one or more shifts per week, depending on need and as agreed upon with the AT Specialist/Voluntary Service Office
5. Requirements
- Familiarity with basic computer software and hardware
- Independent problem-solving skills
- Adeptness in troubleshooting AT device issues (i.e. via internet research, device customer support, etc.)
- Ability to complete assembly of AT equipment
- Pass a background check
- Able to deal with physical, mental and/or hearing impaired individuals
- Know your boundaries
- Volunteer must be healthy on the day of volunteering
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a courteous manner
- Position is mostly sedentary (sitting)
- Limit personal calls and texting to lunch and break periods
6. Training and Skill Development
- Initial and annual volunteer training
- Specific Customer Service unit training
