Mission Statement
Sustainability is not just an environmental issue. It impacts our socio-economic makeup and has implications on our health, our economic well-being and the legacy we hand down to our children.
Inika’s mission is to provide San Diego’s schools with the resources and tools that enable them to function in complete harmony with nature. Our vision for school sustainability follow the milestones of eliminating wasteful practices (source reduction), diverting recyclables away from the landfill, and focusing on environmental, economic and wellness impacts of food, education and lifestyles.
Our programs adhere to the guiding principles of (1) Financial Sustainability - Design solutions that are economically feasible (2) Program-Based - We prefer a program-based approach over an advocacy-based approach so as to offer measurable and action oriented solutions; and, (3) Economic and Social Justice - We encourage solutions that create entrepreneurial opportunities and enhance the ability of low-income communities, women and children to participate in a green economy.
Description
Our current programs focus on making San Diego’s schools "Zero Waste". We do this by (1) educating students and educators on the impact of their waste footprint on the planet, (2) designing programs to eliminate materials and/or divert them away from the landfill, and (3) enabling school and district leadership realize the financial benefits of waste reduction.
