**CALL FOR DESIGNER**

The Kingfisher Theater is conducting a search for a costume designer for our Winter 2018 production of The Devil, the Witch, and the Blacksmith adapted by Amy Canfield and Kevin Dedes from a short story by Nikolai Gogol.

ABOUT THE SHOW: KFT’s annual wintertime tradition returns! Join the escapades of Vakula, Oksana, The Devil, and more as they try to save Christmas in the only way they know how. Love, money, and mischief abound in this goofy and heartwarming adaptation of Gogol’s short story by company members Amy Canfield and Kevin Dedes. Critics called last year’s crowd-pleasing run an 'absurd’ and 'kitschy’ holiday farce. Come for the horilka, stay for the laughs. And in a Kingfisher first, we’ll be performing at Rochester’s own MuCCC. This production will be directed by Artistic Director Kevin Dedes.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE: This will be the third iteration of this fantastical, irreverent, and surreal holiday farce set in the small Ukrainian Village of Dikanka. What I'm looking for is someone who can understand the roots of the story--including the cultural touchstones of Ukraine in the late 19th Century and today--but also give to the show a modern sensibility. There is plenty of room for silliness, extravagance, visual humor, anachronism, and kitsch, in addition to 'cultural authenticity.’ Gogol has been compared to Marc Chagall, and I could see this show as being somewhere in the vein of "Slava’s Snow Show," a Van Gogh painting, or a Tim Burton Movie ("Pee Wee’s Big Adventure"). I am really looking forward to a strong vision from a creative costume designer.

PERFORMANCE & REHEARSAL DATES: The specific performance dates are currently TBA, but are almost finalized to be the first two weeks of January 2018 at MuCCC. Rehearsals will begin mid-November 2017.

CASTING PRACTICES: The Kingfisher Theater adheres to the Actors Equity standard of encouraging and promoting Non-Traditional Casting. "Non-Traditional Casting is designed to increase artistic options by expanding casting opportunities for women, actors of color, seniors and actors with disabilities in roles where race, gender, age or the presence or absence of a disability are not germane." The Kingfisher Theater will offer Buffalo/Rochester Special Appearance Equity Contracts to Equity actors who may be cast in this production. No roles have been pre-cast although we require our company members to have the right of first refusal. There will likely be doubling of roles. This is a medium to large sized ensemble cast (roughly 10 actors of various ages, although it is somewhat flexible.)

COMPENSATION: The Kingfisher Theater acknowledges that artists are the essence of theater and strives to compensate them for their work. We plan to offer a stipend and other benefits to our costume designer, commensurate on experience. To be discussed in the interview process.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: If you would like to be considered for this position, please submit the following to Kevin Dedes at kdedes@ thekingfishertheater.org:
A design resume, portfolio, or both.
A short statement regarding your interest in this show, and perhaps some ideas of how you’d like to conceptualize this production.
Any specific technical, costume, or design elements you would like to use in this production.
Any other production or artistic collaborators you would like to bring to this production.

The deadline for submission is August 15, 2017.
