Mission Statement
Preserve and enhance the 2,110-acre South Mountain Reservation (SMR) in Essex County, New Jersey, including its trails, infrastructure and natural beauty. Promote the responsible use of the Reservation and environmental awareness through free hikes, activities, educational programs and public service efforts, including advising local government agencies, and channeling public opinion to them, and overseeing projects. Partners with the Essex County Park System and allied organizations in support of the above objectives.
Description
The Conservancy depends entirely on volunteers to achieve its mission of preserving, enhancing, and promoting the Reservation. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, and are of all ages, skills and abilities. What we share in common is an appreciation for the treasure of the Reservation, and a willingness to insure it's healthy survival. The Conservancy plans, organizes and runs several group and individual volunteer efforts that involve planting and forest regeneration, hiking trail maintenance and construction, and litter removal.
