ORGANIZATION: St. James Immigrant Assistance

Purpose: develop lesson plans for tutors on topics of importance to all immigrants, such as Know Your Rights and Family Emergency Planning.

Time commitment : minimum of one year; monthly time commitment varies.

Reports to: Glenda Caldwell, ESL Specialist

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop lesson plans on specific topics, and at a variety of ESL levels, to be used by tutors. Lesson plans need to be reviewed by the ESL Specialist
  • When requested by tutors, provide advice on how to use lesson plans
  • Solicit feedback from tutors on usability of lesson plans

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Fill out a Volunteer Information Form, including providing character references.
  • Be reliable and on time for regularly scheduled work sessions.
  • Respond in a timely manner to communication from your staff contact.
  • Report all volunteer hours to your staff supervisor.
  • Sign a statement of agreement to adhere to program policies.
  • Contact staff in a timely manner regarding any problems or concerns.
  • Perform all volunteer duties in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Recognize that all volunteer duties will be performed without financial compensation.

Qualifications: Must have experience teaching ESL to adults, and either a masters or certification in TESOL.
