Healthy Incentives Program

Do you care about local agriculture, food access, and community engagement? Are you interested in supporting farmers and community members at your local farmers market? If so, become a part of Healthy Hampshire’s outreach team for the Healthy Incentives Program!

Also known as HIP, this state-wide government incentive gives families access to fresh, local produce by providing a monthly SNAP benefit based on household size. With this benefit, families can purchase fruits and vegetables at their local farmers markets, farm stands, CSAs, or mobile markets. Every dollar that they spend on a HIP eligible food is matched up to the monthly cap ($40/$60/$80), increasing their food purchasing power by reimbursing the money right back onto their SNAP cards!

We need your help to spread the word and help both farmers and clients understand how to take advantage of this benefit so that they can maximize it at all HIP locations and beyond!

Help us:

  • Inform folks who qualify for HIP about the benefit and answer any follow-up questions that they might have at their local farmers markets

  • Assist farmers who might need extra help at markets with HIP transactions (swiping folks’ EBT cards into the HIP terminal, easy-peezy!) There will be so many new faces coming to these spaces that we anticipate more traffic, something that many farmers aren’t used to and might need extra support with!

  • Spread the word to market visitors who are not familiar with the program and would like to learn more about how groundbreaking this new benefit is!

  • Make farmers markets places that welcome everyone!

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in community engagement and are willing to learn and apply a socially aware understanding of food justice to this work.Volunteers should be willing to attend a training/orientation session about HIP and the roles they will have at their local farmers market. We are also looking for time commitments anywhere between 2-10 hours a week, but are flexible to individual’s schedules and time constraints. Above all, we want volunteers who are excited to help us ensure that HIP reaches as many folks as possible!

***Mutlilingual volunteers (particularly those proficient in Spanish) are especially encouraged to apply!***
