The Crime Victims Assistance Network I-CAN is a crime victim assistance organization based in Sacramento, California. I-CAN provides services, free of charge, to victims of violent crime in Sacramento, throughout the state of California and across the country that include information, advocacy, accompaniment to parole hearings (statewide) and resources and referral information.

I-CAN Volunteer Victim Advocates work to enhance the victim-centered approach embraced by I-CAN. Advocates provide crisis intervention, peer counseling, emotional support, information and referrals to victims of crime and their loved ones. Volunteers can support a victim through the parole hearing process as well as observe parole hearings to gather more information about the process to better aid the victims we serve. Volunteer opportunities are also available to assist I-CAN in outreaching to the community and other organizations.

Individuals interested in becoming a Volunteer Victim Advocate with I-CAN must first successfully complete the I-CAN Victim Advocate training that covers a variety of subjects on victim services, with emphasis on crisis intervention and peer counseling.


General Qualifications for Volunteer Victim Advocates:

- Must be 21 years of age or older

- Relate sensitively to victims

- Communicate well with others and be a good listener

- Maintain confidentiality

- Pass the live scan background check

- Complete 40-hour training and ongoing training

- Bi-lingual individuals (especially those fluent in Spanish) are encouraged to apply
