When you help an adult learn to read and write, you help an entire family.

Literacy can lead to a job, a better job, the ability to read to one’s children, help with their homework and read correspondence sent home from school. It can lead to a driver’s license, a high school diploma or equivalency, to citizenship, to a better life.

At Literacy Volunteers of America, Essex & Passaic Counties, we help adults achieve all of those things. But we need your help: We need more volunteers to teach Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages.

No teaching experience or knowledge of a second language is required, just a desire to help. We are plumbers and secretaries, job seekers, administrators, retired teachers, journalists, even a former Peace Corps member or two. Our students are from the United States and more than 150 other countries - from Albania to Zimbabwe. Many are waiting for help.

A great way to help is to join our tutor training workshop in Montclair, which meets on five Saturday afternoons at the Montclair Public Library, 50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042, 12:15-3:45 pm, October 7, 14, 21, 28, and November 4, 2017. Attendance at all sessions is highly recommended.
