SBP SOLA is seeking volunteers for the Fall and Winter months!

In one day, a single volunteer with no previous construction experience can mud and spackle several rooms, install a new floor or paint a small house. Imagine what’s possible in two days-or two weeks, or a month? As a volunteer, you will literally help rebuild a family's home. The more volunteers we have, the greater our impact.

SBP SOLA takes volunteers 7 days a week, 8:30am - 4:30pm. Schedule can vary depending on the needs of the volunteer. You can register as an individual or a group.

POSSIBLE TASKS: muck and gut, hanging insulation or drywall, mudding/spackling, sanding, texturing, priming, painting (exterior/interior), laying floors, and/or hanging trim, doors and baseboards.

While there is no experience necessary, if you have significant experience in any of these areas or in framing, electrical, plumbing and/or cabinetry, please inform the Volunteer Department prior to your arrival so that we can assign you to a specialty team.

About SBP South Louisiana

Location:

16270 OLD HAMMOND HWY, Baton Rouge, LA 70816, US

Mission Statement

Mission SBP’s mission is to shrink time between disaster and full recovery by ensuring that communities are are resilient prior to a disaster and that disaster-impacted citizens and communities recover in a prompt, efficient and predictable manner. In August 2016, South Louisiana was devastated by historic flooding. Across the region more than 140,000 homes have been damaged and destroyed. SBP has opened an operational office in Baton Rouge to help homeowners who were affected by the flooding to rebuild. The office will also serve as the hub through which SBP will train other rebuilding organizations by providing technical support, capacity building, and best practices. YOU can make a difference in the lives of homeowners in South Louisiana by volunteering with SBP.

Description

SBP’s model is enhanced by AmeriCorps, which provides 180 members annually to manage worksites and clients, and train the organization’s volunteers nationally.

Through its Disaster Resilience and Recovery Lab (DRRL), SBP works to share lessons learned, prevent common barriers to recovery and help communities utilize SBP’s standardized, repeatable and proven-effective model.

SBP shrinks time between disaster and recovery via five interventions:

1. Rebuild homes quickly after disasters by mobilizing private sector innovations and assigning a single point of contact to make the home rebuilding process faster and more predictable.

2. Share rebuilding innovations with other rebuilding organizations to allow for efficient, predictable recovery on a national scale.

3. Prepare home and business owners prior to and following disaster with specific steps to mitigate risk and improve resilience.

4. Advise policy makers immediately after a disaster so they can deploy federal dollars sooner, and in a way that empowers an efficient recovery.

5. Advocate for the reform of disaster recovery strategies in the U.S. to improve the predictability and speed of recovery.
