Between Borders

People, Places and Time Festival 2017

Between Borders will be launching its inaugural People, Places and Time Festival 2017, which will host a range of events across London aimed at opening up spaces for dialogue and discussion between the public and those at the forefront of tackling some of the most urgent questions and challenges emanating from some of the worst displacement crises of our time.

The Festival will bring practitioners, researchers, artists, NGOs and institutions together to exchange their insights, experiences and latest findings into ways to improve social inclusion, mental health outcomes and alternative ways to provide psychosocial support.

The arts, storytelling and innovation play an important role in healing and the Festival will spotlight the work of our partners making a difference in extraordinary ways in extremely challenging environments. We will be bringing greater visibility to the voices and stories of those displaced by crises, including by conflict, climate change and disasters.

The Festival will include workshops, screening, talks and exhibition. The Festival will kick off on World Mental Health Day on the 10th October 2017.

About Between Borders

Location:

Chiswick High Road, London, W4, GB

Mission Statement

Changing the conversation on mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) for displaced populations through context-specific anaysis and best practice interventions.

Description

Between Borders was launched in January 2017 on the back of a series of political and humanitarian crises worldwide, triggered initially by the Syrian crisis.

We are a practitioner-led research organisation focusing on forced displacement, mental health and psychosocial support. We address these issues through an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary lens. We connect MHPSS with displacement caused by climate change, development, disasters, and development.

We work with our partners to put a direct spotlight on the benefits of the arts and storytelling in psychosocial support as an alternative to traditional interventions on MHPSS. Their work here is highlighted on our Creative Space. Turning the Lens showcases the stories and voices of those directly impacted by forced displacement around the world.

As an NGO providing direct insights from our team in the field and our partners, we are a global first on MHPSS and forced displacement.

Between Borders founded the Forced Displacement and Mental Health Consortium to bring our global partners together for research, events, workshops and training. Partners include researchers, practitioners, NGOs, innovators, journalists, photojournalists, networks, institutes, and creatives.

February 2017 marked the launch of our World Forced Displacement and Mental Health Day, putting direct recognition on these issues and the people caught in the crossfire of crises worldwide.
