Literacy orange is a charitable organization devoted to providing basic literacy education for adults. We are an independent affiliate of Literacy New York. The program is student focused: the student helps to set individual goals. The student/tutor team is supported by professional staff.

The mission of Literacy Orange has been, and will remain, to help adults learn to read, and write so that they can reach their potential. When adults come to us to learn to read, they have been living lives of poverty and despair. They are dependent on their communities. It is a not a life anyone would choose; to live in a literate society, that values and rewards education, without this basic skill.

Using a state-approved tutor training method, the organization recruits and trains volunteers to provide one to one and small conversation group tutoring for people who are struggling with literacy - both for people who know English, and those who are immigrants and need conversation skills, as well as reading and writing help. There is no cost for tutoring services.

To start tutors, Literacy Orange provides them with all the training necessary before any tutoring activity begins. At the completion of training the tutor will be matched with an individual who has expressed a desire to learn English, or improve their reading and writing skills. The needs and base skills of our students vary to a great extent, but they all need your help to reach a personal goal. Just a couple of hours a week will help them do that, and provide you with a great deal of satisfaction as well. We will provide you with ongoing support when needed, and learning materials too.

Unfortunately we do not take on young people to tutor, and because of the process of tutoring we do ask for at least for a year commitment, at least for one hour a week. if you are still interested please let me know.

Our website is designed with a tutor tab, with helpful links in making tutoring a success.
