Join the volunteer team at Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading.
We bring accomplished authors into pre-K-12 classrooms in high-needs schools, where they teach a genre of writing and guide students in creating their own writing projects, based on the theme of the author's book. Our rich, innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula and meet Common Core Learning Standards, have a successful record of building literacy skills and creating motivated readers at schools around the city.
You need no experience or training to volunteer as a classroom coach to engage and encourage students as they work. You'll help small groups of students edit short stories or essays, research a topic, or create artwork to illustrate their writing.
Individual workshops run 1 to 2 hours on a school day, usually in the morning. You can participate in any number of workshops in a program, which run for 3 to 6 dates scheduled over a few weeks. With a fresh slate creative, thought-provoking programs every school year, you'll find many workshops you'll want to be part of.
