Summary:
Create meaningful and lasting experiences with youth by becoming an education volunteer at The Ohio History Connection! Take part in immersive educational experiences that allow students to get hands on with history. This position is great for volunteers who would like to work with children, gain classroom experience, have classroom experience, are studying education or are passionate about history!


Responsibilities:
Volunteers will help facilitate educational and interactive learning activities in the Ohio History Center museum and Ohio Village on a variety of topics. This opportunity offers period costume and non-costume opportunities. Here are just a few examples of some of our engaging and dynamic programs that you can take part in!

Underground Railroad: It’s 1859 and the nation is on the brink of Civil War. Students will observe and interview villagers to understand the Underground Railroad and identify the secret "conductor."
Thunder Mugs & Tea Cups: Discover daily life in 1890s Ohio. Transportation, immigration, and daily life are explored through primary and secondary sources and hands-on activities.
Common Cents:See what happens when students take on the business of running Ohio Village! Using Historic Thinking Skills, students will learn basic economics and budgeting as they buy, sell and earn.
Discover Archaeology: Students get hands-on as they dig in to a simulated archaeological excavation.
Cultural Traditions, Immigration: Journey to Ohio and more....


Skills Required:
No formal teaching experience required! Volunteers must be able to interact with children in an informal setting and with a variety of learning styles.


Time Commitment:
Choose your own days! This position calls for weekday availability, between September-May, 9am-2pm, for at least one 5 hour shift, during the school year OR during the spring season, April and/or May.


Work Environment:
Involves mostly weekday work in an outdoor and living history site, in many types of weather conditions. Some programs require period costuming.


Physical Demands:
Involves frequent walking, standing, sitting, bending, stopping and occasional lifting. Should be able to lift 20 pounds, but not required.


Training:
Seasonal training to be provided in Summer and Winter each year.


Age Requirement:
Volunteers must be 18+
