STEM Sisters (https://usm.maine.edu/stemsisters), out of the University of Southern Maine wants to connect with women in STEM fields to nerd out with young women in the Portland community, inspiring them with your STEM lores!

Our goal is to cultivate programming throughout the 2018-2019 academic year that features a broad range of STEM topics shared in innovative ways.

Volunteers sought will have some correlation to the STEM fields and we are looking for women or men who can partner with USM students to present learning experiences to high schoolers about topics beyond the school curricula. We take our experiences, our interests, and passions about specific STEM topics and excite high school girls about STEM. If you’re an artist, in robotics, a teacher, a musician, a luthier, in medicine, or you’re not sure if your work correlates please give me a shout out at usm.vista@maine.edu, I want to talk to you -- there is science and math in EVERYTHING!

Mission Statement

Service-Learning & Volunteering at USM provides a pedagogical approach that integrates academic learning with meaningful experience or work in the community. It is an experiential focus on learning that must be embedded in the curriculum. Students in community engagement bring theories, knowledge, and practices developed through academic reading, writing, and analysis to specific topics-related study and work in community sites. Community engagement advances USM’s mission to foster in students "a spirit of critical inquiry and civic participation." We believe community engagement is a critical element of USM’s commitment to the Maine community.
