Financial Stability Americorps
Help people move toward financial stability! Assist community members with employment readiness, teach financial literacy and life skill classes, and support clientele with tax preparation as an FSA during the tax season.
Opportunity Council is a private non-profit community action agency serving Whatcom, Island and San Juan counties. The mission of the agency is to act as a catalyst for positive change, both in the community and in the lives of the people it serves. The agency begins with meeting the basic needs of the client, including access to homeless housing resources and referrals to other services.
This project supports the agency's mission by increasing the capacity of the Financial Stability program. The Financial Stability program brings together employment readiness and financial literacy programming that helps clients gain employment in the community, increase financial literacy, and start on the path to financial stability. This project will be focused on increasing the capacity of the classes that are offered under the program umbrella. This includes facilitating in the job search/vocational computer lab, teaching employment and life skill classes, teaching financial capability classes, and coordinating and developing additional financial stability curricula and delivery mechanisms.
Members will also create promotional materials, reach out to new clients, and support community members with tax preparation as an FSA during tax season. Members will also assist in recruiting, training and managing volunteers in the program. This position is contingent on funding.
Position start date: September 1, 2017
Position end date: July 15, 2018
Monthly living allowance: $1,202.86
Segal Education Award: $5,815 upon successful completion of program
School loan benefit: Most members are eligible for forbearance during service period and interest accrued while in service may be paid by AmeriCorps if loan is in qualified forbearance, deferment or grace period.
