General Description Summary
*This is an unpaid internship* Internships are available August 2017 - June 2018. You can choose fall or spring semester, or both!
The Families Together Therapeutic Preschool is a program that serves high-risk families and their young children from the East St. Paul and Frogtown neighborhoods. The children and families we serve are living in poverty, have a parent with mental illness or chemical dependency, have suffered abuse or neglect and/or involved in the child protection system. The therapeutic preschool provides children ages 2.9 yrs-5 yrs old with a therapeutic classroom setting as well as play therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and home visiting so that their many needs are addressed.
Job Responsibilities
- Interacting and interfacing with families in high-stress situations.
- Working in the classroom to support teachers and children.
- Driving small bus to pick-up and drop off children from their East-Side St. Paul or Frogtown Homes with teacher support.
- Preparing and serving lunch according to school protocols.
- Ability to be flexible on a daily basis.
Students will learn about the challenges and systems in place to assist young children coming from poverty, child protection system, chronically stressed families. Students will be exposed to and learn from social workers, mental health therapists, and early childhood teachers who work with the children and families in the therapeutic preschool program.
Education Requirements / Work Experience Requirements
This internship is available to students enrolled in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Early Childhood Education, Human Services, Speech or Physical Therapy, or a similar college program. College credit may be arranged.
The intern position requires 20 hours per week. Times are specific and cannot be modified:
Choose one of the following -
Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 7:00 am - 1:30 pm with every other Thursday case consultation meetings at 1:30 pm or 2:30 pm for one hour.
Monday 11:30-5:00pm, Wednesday & Friday 7:00am-1:30pm with every other Thursday case consultation meetings at 1:30 pm or 2:30 pm for one hour.
Tuesday 11:30-5:00pm, Wednesday & Friday 7:00am-1:30pm with every other Thursday case consultation meetings at 1:30 pm or 2:30 pm for one hour.
Candidates must be able to pass a DHS background check and have a clean driving record. Experience working with young children and families is preferred.

We provide 3,400 children and adults therapeutic services and resources. Additionally, over 35,000 working adults seek our educational resources to learn how to balance work and family.
- Employment & Economic Opportunity - Each year we serve 1,300 adults as they find, keep and advance in their employment. Our comprehensive approach includes ongoing employment support to ensure individuals retain jobs by learning soft skills necessary in a complex work environment. Our largest and most specialized services are geared toward immigrants and refugees and individuals with disabilities.
